Pros and Cons of Selling in the Winter

Sometimes, you have to move unexpectedly. Whatever the circumstance may be, moving in the cold temperatures isn’t ideal when you have to pack up your house. However, selling your house, condo, or apartment in the winter isn’t all bad. Here are some pros and cons of selling your home or buying one during the cold months…

  • Winter sellers are most likely highly motivated to sell before the end of the year. So if you’re a buyer, occasionally  they will lower the price or accept a lower offer if they need to move quick.
  • Since most people don’t put their house on the market during the winter months, there’s less inventory. For sellers, when there’s less inventory there’s less competition, which means more attention for your home.
  • Many realtors are looking for a year end sale, or a good beginning of the year sale to get them on the right track. Because of this, realtors will take on the challenge of helping you sell your house.
  •  While snow and ice are no one’s favorites, it can hide some of the not so pleasant outdoor features of a house.
  • Markets in warmer states like Florida, California and Arizona have much more inventory because they have relatively warmer winter months.

  • Because of lower inventory, it may be harder to find the home you’re looking for.
  • Lower prices equal better deals!
  • It’s extremely difficult to do renovations during the winter months, leaving homes with needed repairs or updates that the new homeowners need to take care of.
  • Homes are harder to keep clean in the winter when people are tracking in snow and ice.
  • The holidays make home selling an inconvenience and people are more likely to be on a tighter budget.

Don’t be scared of selling your home in the winter! There’s always a buyer looking for what you’re selling!
